AmeriCurious (“AmeriCurious,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website americurious.com (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit the Site, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain English on purpose — because a privacy policy nobody can read isn’t actually protecting anybody.
By using the Site, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Site.
1. Information We Collect
a) Information You Give Us Directly We collect information you voluntarily provide when you:
- Subscribe to our newsletter or email list (name, email address)
- Leave a comment on a blog post (name, email address, website URL if provided, and comment content)
- Contact us through a contact form or email (name, email address, and the content of your message)
- Follow or interact with us on social media platforms (subject to that platform’s own privacy policy)
b) Information Collected Automatically Like nearly every website, we automatically collect certain technical information when you visit, including:
- IP address and approximate geographic location
- Browser type and version, device type, and operating system
- Pages visited, time spent on the Site, referring/exit pages, and click patterns
- Date and time of visit
This information is collected through cookies, pixel tags, and similar tracking technologies (see Section 3 below).
c) Information From Third Parties If you log in or interact with the Site through a third-party service (for example, a social media login or comment plugin), we may receive limited information from that service in accordance with your privacy settings on that platform.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Send you the newsletter, blog updates, and content you’ve subscribed to
- Respond to comments, questions, and messages
- Operate, maintain, and improve the Site’s content, functionality, and user experience
- Analyze traffic and reader behavior so we know what’s actually working (and what to write next)
- Detect, prevent, and address spam, abuse, or technical issues
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information. Full stop.
3. Cookies & Tracking Technologies
The Site uses cookies and similar technologies to:
- Remember your preferences
- Understand how visitors use the Site (via analytics tools such as Google Analytics)
- Support advertising or affiliate tracking, where applicable (see Section 4)
You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies may affect some features of the Site, but the Site will still function.
We do not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals, as no uniform industry standard for interpreting them yet exists.
4. Advertising & Affiliate Links
AmeriCurious may participate in affiliate marketing programs and/or display advertising through third-party networks (such as Google AdSense or similar services). This means:
- Some links on the Site may be affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
- Third-party advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- We do not control the data collection practices of third-party advertisers or affiliate networks. We encourage you to review their respective privacy policies.
You can opt out of interest-based advertising through resources like the Digital Advertising Alliance’s opt-out page or your ad platform’s own settings (e.g., Google Ads Settings).
5. Email Communications
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we use a third-party email service provider (e.g., [Insert Provider — Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Beehiiv, etc.]) to manage and send communications. Your email address is stored securely with that provider and is used solely to deliver the content you signed up for.
Every email includes an unsubscribe link. You can opt out at any time — no hard feelings, no hoops to jump through.
6. Comments
When you leave a comment, the comment itself, along with your name and email address (if provided), may be publicly visible on the Site. We reserve the right to moderate, edit, or remove any comment that is spam, abusive, off-topic, or otherwise violates our content guidelines. Your email address is never published or shared publicly without your action to do so.
7. Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share information only in these limited circumstances:
- Service providers who help us operate the Site (hosting, email delivery, analytics, comment moderation) and who are contractually obligated to protect your data
- Legal compliance, if required to respond to a subpoena, court order, or other lawful request
- Business transfers, in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case your information may be transferred as part of that transaction
- With your consent, for any other purpose we disclose to you at the time of collection
8. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Policy, or as required by law. Newsletter subscribers can request removal at any time (see Section 11).
9. Children’s Privacy
AmeriCurious is not directed at, and does not knowingly collect personal information from, children under the age of 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction). If we learn we’ve inadvertently collected information from a child, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details in Section 12.
10. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws (such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)), including the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect and how it’s used
- Request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (note: we do not sell your data)
- Withdraw consent for marketing communications at any time
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information in Section 12. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
11. How to Unsubscribe or Request Data Deletion
- Newsletter: Click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of any email.
- Comments: Contact us to request removal of a comment or associated personal information.
- General data requests: Email us at [Insert Contact Email] with the subject line “Privacy Request,” and we’ll take it from there.
12. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. That said, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
13. Third-Party Links
The Site may contain links to third-party websites (tourism boards, restaurants, government data sources, other blogs, etc.). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those external sites. Once you leave americurious.com, this Privacy Policy no longer applies.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. The “Last Updated” date at the top will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
