The 2027 switch window opens Oct. 15; price your prescriptions before choosing.
A $12 national average is not a renewal quote. On Sept. 28, 2026, CMS projected weighted-average Medicare Advantage premiums at $12 a month for 2027, down from $14.37 in 2026; Fierce Healthcare reported the same forecast that day 1 7.
Medicare.gov’s 2027 Plan Finder is already live, while the annual window to change Medicare coverage starts Oct. 15 1 1.
If you help a parent with coverage, collect the drug list, pharmacy, and doctors now rather than assuming the headline fits their ZIP code. A plan’s network and refill costs can undo the appeal of a small premium difference; the Annual Notice is the right starting point, not a clearance sticker.
One Number That Matters
$2,400 is the 2027 annual out-of-pocket limit for covered Medicare Part D drugs, up from $2,100 in 2026, per Medicare.gov’s current cost page and AARP’s Aug. 3, 2026 explainer 2 6.
Wallet translation: that ceiling rises by $300 ($2,400 – $2,100), but premiums and prescriptions outside the plan’s coverage do not count toward it; this is a cap on covered-drug cost-sharing, not your ordinary annual bill. This week: use the exact medication list, pharmacy, and deductible in Medicare.gov Plan Finder; don’t infer your bill from the cap alone.
The Hack
Run the Refill Route Test before choosing a drug plan.
Open Medicare.gov’s Plan Finder, select 2027, enter the ZIP code, add each current prescription, and select the pharmacy actually used. If a second pickup route is realistic, compare it with the same drug list; repeat the run for each covered person and save the results. Treat the estimate as a starting point, not a green light.
Compare estimated drug costs with premiums, deductible, and cost-sharing; use the Summary of Benefits to verify every medication and key doctor is covered. CMS says Plan Finder compares premiums, costs, benefits, and coverage information; Medicare.gov says the 2027 Part D deductible can be as high as $700, though some plans charge less or none 1 2.
Why It Works: Plan pricing is split between recurring premiums and point-of-sale cost-sharing. Matching actual drugs and pharmacy makes the full cost comparable rather than letting the monthly sticker price dominate. The test is drug list → pharmacy → full-year cost; it exposes whether an apparent bargain depends on a formulary tier, deductible, or preferred-pharmacy rule.
From the Trenches
A Sept. 28 r/Medicare thread is a reminder, not a market survey. One commenter said their Aetna SilverScript Choice notice showed that plan would not be offered for them in 2027; replies pointed to the Medicare.gov options and Oct. 15 enrollment date 1.
The routine is worth borrowing: read the Annual Notice of Change and check whether your plan, drugs, doctors, and pharmacy still line up.
CMS says people who want to keep current Medicare coverage generally do not have to re-enroll; if the plan is discontinued, compare replacements instead of waiting for the old card to fail 1. Put the notice beside Plan Finder, not memory; verify the new drug and pharmacy terms rather than relying on a friend’s screenshot.
One Weird Trick
The contrarian move is sometimes to do nothing. CMS says people who want to keep current Medicare coverage generally do not need to re-enroll; the Oct. 15–Dec. 7 window is a chance to change 2027 coverage, not an annual paperwork tax 1.
The catch is the Annual Notice of Change: it can flag shifts in premiums, covered drugs, doctors, or pharmacy network. Read it, verify details in Plan Finder, and switch only if coverage no longer fits; a mailer or “zero-premium” pitch is not a reason by itself. A plan can keep its headline premium while changing a drug’s tier or pharmacy status, so the notice matters more than the sales page.
Compare the notice with the current plan details; if changes in medicines, doctors, or pharmacy break the fit, choose a replacement. If not, there’s no switch needed just to check a box.
Seasonal Radar
Marketplace calendar, next up: HealthCare.gov’s 2027 open-enrollment period starts Nov. 1, 2026 and ends Jan. 15, 2027 1. Select a plan by Dec. 15 for coverage beginning Jan. 1. Plans chosen after Dec. 15 generally start Feb. 1, per the federal calendar 1.
Do one prep step now: open HealthCare.gov’s “Get ready to apply” checklist and gather the household and income documents it calls for; the site says 2027 applications and updates start Nov. 1 1. If you use a state-run exchange, check its own dates and keep your current renewal notice beside that checklist, so your insurer and plan name are at hand.

Skip Disney+ Premium if you don’t use the no-ad benefit. Disney’s U.S. price guide lists Premium at $21.49/month and the ad tier at $12.49/month; Variety confirmed the rates on Sept. 23, 2026 1 1.
| Disney+ plan | Monthly price | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| With ads | $12.49 | Save $9 |
| Premium, no ads | $21.49 | — |
$21.49 – $12.49 = $9/month, or $108/year ($9 × 12). Use Profile → Account → Your Plans & Billing → Change and select the ad tier; Disney says a downgrade takes effect on the next billing date 1.
A plan change may end a promotion or price hold; if a third party bills you, make the change through that provider 1.
Your 24-Hour Move
Run and save one 2027 comparison in Medicare Plan Finder using the beneficiary’s ZIP code, current prescriptions, and preferred pharmacy; copy drug names and strengths from the labels, not memory.
Bring the result to the family plan discussion: you can compare now, but Medicare’s switch window begins Oct. 15 1 1.
